El Cadejo

The cadejos are ghostly black dogs from Central American legend. They are similar to the black dog legends from England, except there are two different cadejos, one is black and evil, and the other is white and good. The cadejo’s appearance varies greatly from region to region. However most of the time they have hooves like a goat on both feet. Sometimes they have goat horns as well. The black one is sometimes said to drag a chain behind it too. The white cadejo has blue eyes and the black cadejo has fiery red eyes. Cadejos are very large for dogs, being comparable to the size of a cow.

Legend has it that God sent the white cadejo to protect people who were out at night, people travelling along country roads, drunks and people down on their luck. The devil saw this and was so angered by it he created the black cadejo to attack those same people. The cadejos most often interact with people in the country side, especially farmers who live near volcanoes.

It’s said before a cadejo appears you will hear the sound of it’s hooves on the ground. The cadejos can move as fast as the wind and silently, so hearing their hooves before they’re seen is done on purpose to announce their presence. It’s said the cadejos emit a strong goat smell. Although the black cadejo may also smell like urine and sulphur.

White cadejos only eat white flowers that grow on the sides of volcanoes, where as black cadejos eat meat, preferably small children.

Black cadejos are more often encountered. In addition of threatening physical harm to anyone they encounter, black cadejos also tempt people into vices and bad choices. If a person turns their back on a black cadejo, or if they survive being attacked by a black cadejo then they go mad. One unusually large black cadejo is said to be the devil himself in the form of a cadejo. This one will not directly attack people, but if it’s seen then misfortune will soon befall that person.

The only thing that can protect people from the black cadejo is the white cadejo, although praying sometimes helps. The white cadejo also protects people from other local legends, such as La Siguanaba.

Belief in the cadejos is genuine and people still report encountering them.

In 1975, in Guatemala, a 19 year old Mayan girl and her sister were out running an errand for her mother at night. They saw a black cadejo at a crossroads, who stared them down and wouldn’t let them cross the road. The two girls walked backwards away from the cadejo, but the eldest one tripped and fell. She saw a fast white shape move past her. When she got up the black cadejo was gone. She was certain the white blur she saw was the white cadejo come to protect her.

Sightings of the cadejos happen most often during times of strife. As recently as 2016 there were reports of cadejos being seen during the El Salvadoran civil war.
