Ramidreju

Image
The ramidreju is a small weasel like monster from Cantabrian mythology. This small creature resembles a weasel or marten. It has a long body, green striped fur and yellow eyes. The ramidreju also has a hog like face with tusks. Ramidrejus are very rare. A single individual is born to a weasel or marten every 100 years. They live in the mountains and forests of Cantabria, a region in northern Spain. Ramidrejus are very sought after. People would keep an eye out for one whenever they were out in the woods. This is because the ramidreju had several helpful abilities. First it had an impeccable sense for finding gold. It was able to route out gold nuggets with its hog nose in the same manner that hogs dig up truffles. In addition to this the ramidreju’s fur and skin were able to cure any disease just by rubbing the creature on the ill person. Because of these qualities, finding a ramidreju was considered to be exceptionally lucky. Sources https://www.reddit.com/r...

Octo-squatch

What follows is a report of a cryptid or alien creature that feels oddly connected to the previous entry of this blog. Yet the only thing that connects them is the cephalopod appearance of the creatures, and that both stories took place in Spain, albeit on opposite sides of the country.  In the summer of 1961 Arquimedes Sanchez and an unnamed coworker were driving through the Basque Mountains in the province of Vizcaya. They were hauling construction equipment, driving along the road at night. However the two of them knew the route well and had done this run many times before.  They were nearing their destination at Puerto de Barazar when an alarmingly strange creature climbed over the embankment on the side of the road and ran in front of the truck. It was an octopus like being covered in rusty red hair. It walked upright on four tentacles (yes, I know I drew six) and stood about 3 to 4 feet tall.  Mr Sanchez slammed on the breaks and stopped before hitting the cr...

Alien Octopoids

Image
On August 16, 1968, in the Spanish countryside near Tivissa, John Mateu, an ordinary farmer, was going about his morning routines. It was 6am and the sun had just risen over the horizon. On a nearby hill some lights caught John Mateu’s eye. He assumed this was someone having car trouble and went up the hill to help them.  When Mr. Mateu reached the top of the hill he saw a dome shaped UFO, which he described as shaped like ‘half a watermelon’. The lights were coming from the flat bottom of the spacecraft, which hovered only 4 feet off the ground.  While observing the UFO Mr. Mateu noticed two creatures came running for the UFO. He described them as having bulbous bodies that stood on top tentacles, somewhat like an octopus. However they had grimacing faces instead of just a pair of eyes on their fronts. As well they had either four or five tentacles, that they stood upright on like legs. The aliens were only three feet in height.  The two aliens entered the space c...

Escornau

Image
The escornau was an unusual unicorn from Ahigal, Spain. It was a vicious beast the terrorized the village sometime in the 16 th century. It was a hybrid creature with the head of a boar, ears of a rabbit, front body of a bull and back end of a horse. It had a cork screw unicorn horn in the middle of its forehead. There are two versions of its origin. Either the escornau was sent by god as a punishment for the village's sinful ways. Alternately the beast was the union between two different species of farm animal. Pretty much any combination of the four animals that make up the escornau were said to be the parents, a cow and a stallion, or a bull and a sow, or a horse and a rabbit, I honestly don't know how that one would work. Either way, there was so much sin in this village that even the farm animals per partaking in it. The escornau would use its horn as a weapon, impaling its victims with it. It would sharpen its horn on rocks to keep its tip as sharp as a spear. The be...
