Misplaced Modern Dragons

While dragons vary greatly around the world they can generally be placed into to broad categories, the eastern and western dragons. You would expect that if dragons are being seen in modern times that each type of dragon would be witnessed in their respective regions, eastern dragons being seen in Asia and western dragons being seen in Europe and North America. So far this has held true with the cases I’ve showcased in this blog, with western style dragons and wyverns appearing in America. However I’ve found two incidents that go against this trend, where each kind of dragon is found far outside their respective lands.

In 2001 cryptozoologist Karl Shuker received a report from a group of scientists from the British Naturalists Association. They were adamant about keeping their anonymity, as any admission of a paranormal event happening to them would be career ending.

In March of that year this group of scientists had been out at a quarry in Powys, Wales. There they saw a creature they could only describe as a dragon. It emerged from the woods lining the quarry. The creature was small, only two and a half feet long. It was long and serpentine shaped, with a sea horse shaped head and a whale like fluke for a tail, yet the creature was distinctly reptilian. It gracefully hovered and undulated through the air without wings. It was green in colour and the scales shined in the sunlight. All of the scientists were absolutely sure of what they had seen and that it had been physically there, and not phantom like. They observed the tiny dragon for about four minutes before it hid away in a nook in the rocks. The scientists searched for the creature for a while, but when it couldn’t be found the decided to get back to the task which had brought them out to the quarry in the first place. They had no explanation for what they saw or how it was possible.

The next story comes from Osaka Japan. In May of 2003, English teacher David Nardiello was bicycling home in the late evening. It was pouring torrential rain on his way home. David passed by rice fields on his way home, which had become filled extra high from days worth of heavy rain. David noticed a sudden burst of movement in one of the fields to his side. From there emerged a creature David described as a western dragon. It was alabaster white in colour. The dragon had a snake like head, long neck, scaly body, cat like legs and bat like wings. This dragon stared David down with black shark like eyes and snarled at him, revealing a mouth full of needle sharp teeth. It then shot 100 feet into the air and flew off. David was quite frightened by the incident and hurried back to his apartment as fast as he could on his bike.

For the rest of the night David kept watch out his apartment window for the dragon. Much to his surprise and horror the creature returned briefly, flying by high in the air. This prompted David to knock on various other apartments and ask his neighbours if they had also seen the creature. No one had seen it, but people heard strange animal sounds outside. Based on David’s description his neighbours called the creature the neko-hebi-tori, or cat snake bird.
