Wisconsin Dragon

On October 7th 2007 there was an astonishing sighting of a mythical dragon straight out of a fantasy story in Oconto Falls, Wisconsin. Not only this but it was seen by multiple witnesses, who corroborated each other’s stories. All the names in this retelling are pseudonyms.

Jim was the primary witness, who saw the dragon the most times. He, his friend Kay, and six other friends were leaving an arcade, after hanging out there for the evening. In the parking lot one of the friends said he saw something large in the sky, although he didn’t know what it was. The group of them laid down in the grass at the edge of the lot and watched for it to return. After a few minutes they saw a white and tan colored dragon. They described it as a classic European dragon, with four legs and additional wings, a long neck, reptilian head and a long tail. Jim noted that it had smooth, shiny scales that reflected the street lights. They waited a few minutes longer and it returned again, this time flying over from the opposite direction.

After a while the dragon didn’t return and the group of friends assumed it was gone. The six unnamed friends left for their homes in nearby Green Bay. Jim and Kay were local to Oconto, and called Jim’s mother for a ride home.

When Jim’s mother, Janette, arrived the two boys told her about their dragon sightings. As one would expect Janette was skeptical. However while in the parking lot Janette saw a large shadow pass overhead which she couldn’t explain. She then saw a blue fireball wreathed in orange fly across the sky from east to west. While not a dragon, this was an unusual sight itself. The two boys insisted that they had seen a similar fireball before seeing the dragon earlier. Still not convinced, Janette drove them home.

Once back at Jim’s house, the two boys sat in the back yard and watched for the dragon again. Janette also sat with them for about an hour, but didn’t expect to see anything. After that time she decided to go back inside. She stated “I’m tired and I’m going to bed. I doubt...” She was cut off mid sentence when she saw the dragon fly over the house. It was exactly as Jim and Kay had described earlier. The three of them yelled for Jim’s sister, Jill, to come outside and see the dragon as well.

The next thing the group saw was a two fireballs in succession. One flying from east to west, and another one flying from west to east. Then they heard an ear splitting screech, which caused all the neighbourhood dogs to bark uncontrollably. After this the dragon returned for it’s most spectacular sighting yet. It flew over the yard again, this time making a sharp decent until it was only twenty feet above the top of the house. It then shot a fireball out of it’s mouth, exactly like the ones that had been seen earlier. A second dragon then flew by, followed by a group of smaller, baby dragons. The little ones fluttered about the adult dragons and played as they flew. After this the dragons flew out of sight and were not seen again.

Jill noted that the dragon’s bellies were barrel chested and reminded her of a cow. The two adult dragons themselves were also about the size of a cow. Jill also said that the moon was full and bright and she could see everything clearly that night. She said the dragons didn’t flap their wings at all as they flew, but instead glided through the air, and undulated it’s body and tail up and down like it was swimming through water. I find this interesting, as many other flying cryptids are also seen to not flap their wings while flying, Mothman for example.

The witnesses would go on to causally talk about their sighting around town until it caught the ears of various cryptid and paranormal researchers, who subsequently interviewed them. This story coming from the interview Jim and his family gave to Linda Godfrey. Before meeting with Linda Godfrey, other cryptozoologists had tried to convince Jill what she had seen was a pterosaur. Jill stated to Linda, “I don’t care what the other scientists say, it was not a pterodactyl.” and stated the wing structure of the dragons was completely different, being more like that of a bat. Unfortunately trying to shoehorn uncomfortably weird sightings into being a surviving prehistoric beast is all to common in cryptozoology, see my previous entry on the Salt Lake Fire Drake.

Jim told Linda Godfrey “I believe they were migrating during that month. Hopefully we’ll see them again next October. When talking to the other kids at school, one of the girls around us claimed to have seen the same thing with her cousin two years earlier.”, which raises the question of how common are dragon sightings in this part of Wisconsin?
