Bukavac

 


 The Bukavac is a monster from southern Slavic folklore, primarily Serbia and some parts of Croatia. It is said to lurk in lakes, rivers and swamps. There it hunts for any wanders and drowns people. The bukavac has six legs, multiple gnarled horns and a long tail. Other than this its appearance is quite variable. Sometimes its depicted as a frog or salamander like monster, other times its more humanoid, like some sort of amphibious water ogre.


The Bukavac mostly comes out at night, that’s when it’s most dangerous. It’s known for its loud howls or screams. The name bukavac coming from the Serbian word buka, meaning noise or roar. Besides drowning people, its also known for jumping on the backs of anyone passing by a water source at night and terrorizing them until they shake the bukavac off, or they too succumb to drowning. The bukavac is also capable of controlling water and the weather, and is able to whip up whirlpools and storms.


There are two different origins of the bukavac. In one version it’s the soul of an evil person who drowned in the water its now haunts, or someone who was hung nearby. Other versions the bukavac is a demon sent to torment people.


It’s thought the legend of the bukavac originated to warn people against the dangers of water, especially at night or in bad weather. Many similar monsters are found across Europe. While they all have vastly different appearances, they often show similar abilities and motives, such as drowning people at night, lurking in swamps, controlling weather, and making some sort of loud noise, often being named after the noise they make. If you remember back to the very beginning of this blog I covered the kludde, which is a wolf like monster from the Netherlands which had very similar behaviour. Other such drowning monsters from other areas of Europe are nacken and grindylows.

Horned Dogmen

This entry is going to indulge in some original research. Something I’ve noticed among dogman encounters is the occasional mention of horned dogmen. The cryptid community is usually pretty thorough in classifying subtypes of cryptids. For instance there’s standard, hyena and rottweiler types of dogmen, based on their head and muzzle shape. Yet I haven’t seen anyone else in the cryptid community discuss horned dogmen as a category, just scattered unrelated stories. It’s possible that’s because these creatures aren’t always considered dogmen, but demons, or goatment who happen to have a canine head, although I would think that quality is important enough to change what sort of cryptid they’re classified as. It first appeared in the Han dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD) and are still popular today, although both their appearance and role have changed greatly over the centuries. Today the pixiu are bringers of wealth and associated with the practice of feng shui. Bixie Pixiu There are two types of pixiu. The bixie, or female pixiu, has two horns or antlers. It was responsible for guarding its masters and protecting them from harm. The tianlu was the male and only had one horn or antler. The male was responsible for guarding and attracting wealth.
