Pettorano Star Child

Guissepe Zitella and his family were on an outing together in Pettorano sul Gizio, Itally. It was June 20th, 1993. Mr Zitella was there with his wife Concetta, and his brother and his family. Mr Zitella was a retired air force officer. One article says he was a marshal, while another says he was a non-commissioned officer, so who know what his rank actually was.

They were sitting at a restaurant patio when the brother’s wife saw something fly by, about 100 meters away, over some short trees. She pointed it out to the rest of the family. To Mr. Zitella, it looked like a balloon, a large one that would usually be won at a carnival.

Mr Zitella decided to chase after the balloon and capture it for his nephew. He followed it out towards the edge of town. As he ran he noticed it had two long structures hanging down from the main body. On the edge of town he saw it hovering over a field, just skimming the tops of the wheat. It appeared to be in the middle of the field. Mr Zitella ran around the edge of the stone walled field, towards the gate at the other side.

Even though Mr Zitella only looked away from the balloon for an instant, it was right at the edge of the field when he reached the gate. He faced the thing side on. It was a light brown colour, and had the texture of cigarette paper. It wasn’t a shiny cellophane balloon in the shape of a cartoon character as he expected. Even though he could almost reach out and grab it, he hesitated for a second, not sure what this thing was. In that moment of hesitation the balloon thing leaped up four meters into the air and landed in the middle of the field.

It faced Mr Zitella now. He could see it had black beady eyes, behind some sort of clear visor, and were surrounded by a white opening in its brown covering. There was a small antenna sticking up from its head or body. The two things he had earlier seen dangling down from the ‘balloon’ body was actually a pair of cylindrical legs. They were perfectly straight and did not end in any feet. There was a U or V shape over each knee. Mr Zitella thought this being looked child like, even though it had no torso or arms.

He entered the field and tried to approach it. The creature leaped up twice as high into the air again and hovered at the far edge of the field. Mr Zitella knew this creature’s speed and agility far surpassed his. He gave up on chasing it and decided he should just go back to his family. Right after he had this thought, before he even moved, the creature flew off into the air at incredible speed. It disappeared from view high into the sky. The whole encounter the being was completely silent, not making any sound as it flew.

Mr Zitella returned to his family empty handed. When he returned they all could see the look of shock on his face. His wife was so worried by his expression that when they got home she called the police to report the incident.

Later that day Mr Zitella would meet up with some police officers back at the scene of the incident. The police also canvased the area for more witnesses. No one else had seen the alien balloon creature. However they did find that the wheat in the field the creature had crossed had become discoloured rusty red, and was bent down in a strange way. It was also found the dogs in the area were acting oddly after the encounter and wouldn’t eat for two days after. The police officers found Mr Zitella’s behaviour to be reasonable, and considering his military background they considered him a responsible professional who wouldn’t make up tall tales or be prone to panicked misinterpretations.

News papers soon got a hold of the story. It even reached national news. Mr Zitella would go onto appear in radio shows and UFO magazines. Unlike many people who’ve become famous for their encounters with the paranormal, Mr Zitella didn’t mind the attention and gladly told UFO enthusiasts about the events. This caused some people to speculate he had made the incident up, seeking fame. This prompted Mr Zitella to take a lie detector test, which he passed.

The Pettorano incident ended up being the first in a flap of flying mechanical humanoid sightings in 1993 Italy. Each of them notably different in appearance, but united by their semi to entirely mechanical nature and their ability to fly, leaving investigators confused on whether these things were beings, robots or the UFOs themselves. While this flap was described as the flying humanoid encounters, I find the ‘humanoid’ description to be a stretch for this creature, and a few more involved in the flap. Like many other UFO flaps the flying humanoid robots stopped appearing as suddenly as they started, and no explanation was ever found.
