La Crosse Man Bat and Medford Flying Lizard Man

Wisconsin is known for many cryptid sightings. Most famously the beast of Bray Road, one of the most famous dogman sightings. Although Wisconsin is also home to bigfoot, lake monsters, and even dragons, the latter I have covered in this blog before. Two other monsters which are occasionally sighted in Wisconsin are lizard men, which are far more famous from the Scape Ore swamp of South Carolina, and giant bat human hybrids, the most famous being Batsquatch of Washington state. While these cryptids may be more commonly associated to other places, Wisconsin still has their share of them. And unique to Wisconsin is what appears to be a hybrid of the two, a winged lizard man.

 Medford Flying Lizard Man

In 1997, sometime at night, a warden for the DNR was driving along highway 13, south of Medford. There he saw a reptilian humanoid standing right in the middle of the road. The creature was as tall as an above average human, had no clothing, scaly skin and slitted reptilian eyes. The warden was terrified of the sight, yet he had to get home along this road. He decided to scare the monster out of the way by aggressively driving at it, until it leapt out of the way to avoid his car. At the very last moment, before hitting the lizard man it unfurled previously unseen wings from behind its back and took off into the air just before being hit by the warden’s car. It took off straight up into the air without flapping its wings. The lizard man landed on the road behind the car, and turned to stare at the vehicle again. The warden drove off fast, only wanting to leave the area and the monster behind as quickly as possible.

Shortly after, the exact time frame not given, a truck carrying road crew workers passed through the same area of highway 13. Similarly to the previous sighting the lizard man waited until the truck was very close, then opened its wings and flew up into the air. Although this time the lizard man few passed a stand of trees and out of sight.

In a similar time frame, again exact times not given, a man and his son were looking for their lost dog along a river near La Crosse. While on this search they also saw a lizard man watching them from across the river. The frightful gaze of the lizard man scared the man and son so badly they froze up in fear. It was only by shear will they were able to pull themselves away and run from the area. These witnesses never mentioned wings, and it’s likely this beast was the more land bound variety of lizard man, similar to the one from Scape Ore swamp in South Carolina.

After the flap in 1997, no more lizard men, of the winged or wingless varieties, have been seen in the area.

La Crosse Man Bat

This sighting happened to a father and son. The father chose only to give his Cherokee name, Wohali, to investigators, while the son went unnamed. It was September 26, 2006 around 9:30 pm. Wohali was in the passenger seat, while his 25 year old son drove. They were travelling along a hill section of Briggs Road when the encounter happened. Without any warning, the man bat flew out of the darkness, swooping down over them and was illuminated by the headlights. The beast was six feet tall and greyish brown in colour. It had large wings, 10-12 feet wide, tipped with claws at the end, a wide gaping mouth full of teeth, a long tail with a spade shape at the end, and a very skinny body with visible ribs. The eyes glowed yellow. Wohali said the monster looked hungry.

The man bat would have collided with them, but the son swerved the car out of the way. At the last moment the bat monster also change directions and flew straight up into the sky without flapping its wings. It let out an ear piercing shriek as it flew out of sight.

As soon as Wohali and his son heard the shriek a wave of nausea came over them. They dove out of the stopped car and immediately started vomiting on the side of the road. After several painful minutes they managed to pull themselves together and drive out of the area.

Even after the night had passed the two men remained ill for multiple weeks. No medication could cure their nausea and dizziness. Although after this time the sickness finally faded away. It was only after this sickness had passed did Wohali come forward with his story. He spent much time wondering if he should say anything, or if doing so would give more power to this monster. Yet he decided that people needed to be warned about such a monster’s presence.

Many investigators have compared these two monsters to each other, even suggesting they may be the same beast, or at least in some way connected, as in part of a population. I doubt they are the same individual, or even the same species, as one is clearly far more reptilian than the other. It is possible if curses or negative energies exist that these monster could be sharing in such things. Although Medford and La Crosse are not as close as reports on these monsters had indicated, with Medford being somewhat in the middle of Wisconsin and La Crosse being on the western boarder. Still, it wouldn’t be too far for a large creature to fly. Another monster these two are frequently compared to is mothman. I find this comparison even more dubious. The only things these cryptids have on common with mothman is all of them being flying humanoid, each one very different from the others.

It’s worth noting that this area has an usually large amount of drownings, especially among fit young men. These drowning are not confined to the spring rush of rain and melt water either. Notably, many of the drownings have occurred in the nineties and early 2000s, around the same times these monsters were seen. It’s a cold, frightening though to speculate if these monsters may have been responsible for these drownings, which while less common today, have not stopped.
